"THE HEAVENS ARE TELLING THE GLORY OF GOD; AND THE FIRMAMENT PROCLAIMS HIS HANDIWORK."-Psalm 19:1

Few of us can venture outside on a clear, dark night and not pause for a silent, reflective look at the stars. For countless centuries people have felt a sense of wonder about the heavens. How did our universe come into being? Has it always been here? Is our existence due to random chance or supernatural design? Is God "out there"? If so, what is He like?

Traditionally, the church has answered such questions with Scripture, while science has contributed theories and formulas of its own. Torn between a deep respect for church doctrines and an intellectual need for answers that support what their senses are telling them, many Christians have avoided such discussions altogether.

Actually, the two sides are no longer that far apart. In The Creator and the Cosmos, astrophysicist Dr. Hugh Ross explains how recent scientific measurements of the universe have clearly pointed to the existence of God. Whether you're looking for scientific support for your faith or new reasons to believe, The Creator and the Cosmos will enable you to see the Creator for yourself.

"A compelling summary of scientific evidence that supports belief in God and the Word of God, written on a level even the non-technically trained lay person can understand."-Walter L. Bradley, professor and head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Texas A&M University

"In The Creator and the Cosmos, Dr. Hugh Ross shows how recent cosmological discoveries clearly indicate the universe was created with many characteristics fine-tuned for our life. Though many scientists may resist the logical conclusion, the Creator implied by the scientific evidence is exactly consistent with the God revealed in the Bible."-Dr. Kyle M. Cudworth, Yerkes Observatory, University of Chicago

"The Creator and the Cosmos constitutes a remarkable journey through the most recent scientific findings, providing overwhelming support for design in our universe. Dr. Ross has documented the evidence for design in our universe in such a thorough yet readable style that it will prove to be of great value both to the science student as well as to the interested layperson."-Dr. David H. Rogstad, physicist, Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory TABLE OF CONTENTS: Chapter 1: The Awe-Inspiring Night Sky Chapter 2: My Skeptical Inquiry Chapter 3: The Discovery of the Century Chapter 4: The Matter Mystery Chapter 5: The Beautiful Fit Chapter 6: Einstein's Challenge Chapter 7: Closing Loopholes-Round One Chapter 8: Closing Loopholes-Round Two Chapter 9: Science Discovers Time Before Time Chapter 10: A God Outside of Time, But Knowable Chapter 11: A Brief Look at A Brief History of Time Chapter 12: A Modern-Day Goliath Chapter 13: The Divine Watchmaker Chapter 14: A "Just Right" Universe Chapter 15: Earth-The Place for Life Chapter 16: Building Life Chapter 17: Extra-Dimensional Power Chapter 18: The Point

chapter on "Drawing, Don't Leave Home Without It" is one of my favorites.

Since I teach drawing to children, I have gained some new insights into the

process - written so simply. Nita's chapter on the elements and principles

of design is a must read for every Artist. I have often said "I don't

understand abstract art!" Well after you read her chapter 6. ABSTRACTION:

The contemporary garden (Hardcover) has new "Design"

The editors of Phaidon Press continue to impress me. You make the strict work seems simple. In its latest publication, they solve the contemporary garden an encyclopedic amount of material [such as the English garden] and distill them into an easy-to-read photo essay. In this case, the treatise about the development of the modern garden between the early 1920s is until today.

As some readers have discovered, a garden is not always related to a front or back lawn with beautiful flowers. Often, it is a vast expanse of land in nearby residential apartment or a public building. The type of the landscape treatment usually used for these spaces it reflects the aesthetic philosophy of the artist, architect or landscape architect responsible for the design. This style can be in the modern trends reflected. From this perspective, this book provides a historical summary of the modern movement in art, sculpture and architecture in landscape planning.

The book covers many of the pioneering contemporary gardens, including those of sculptor Constantin Brancusi, landscape architect architect Masuno, architect Frank Gherry and designer Piet Oudolf garden. Hundred gardens, in this book represented stand the two of this editor. The first is the waterfall Grotto located under Frank Lloyd Wright home "Falling Waters" in Pennsylvania, United States. Mr. Wright decided to for the natural prejudice, by position, that at home directly above a waterfall. The second is the landscape architect Claude Cormier outdoor installation titled "Blue Stick Garden". Originally in Canada for the Metis international horticultural Expo, it moved to Hestercombe gardens in Somerset UK where it gained additional fame for his boldness and liveliness.

Let's make some great art (Paperback) has "Design"

As a child I had a old fashioned activity book or two, which I loved. My favorite was a 1960s from my mother to me. It employs me on many, many days. The best part of this book was that a few of the fun had activities a component, to leave a lasting lesson. I gained knowledge from some of the activities that I still keep. But most of the activities were trade-oriented, which should be only time fillers.

Fast forward to the discovery of this wonderful, well thought-out book by Marion Deuchars, time to fill and fill the minds of adults and children.

From the outset, this beautifully packaged book invites casual browser, parents and children have lots of fun and learn a lot.

The book the greatest appeal is in its ability to deliver. Deuchars like recognizable and highly valued artistic style (I learned as an important artist in her own right), this book presents itself as a simple, consumables and accessible, but we has a depth and quality benefit but still we can not determine. In other words, not almost knowing that we learn things are, because it's so much fun. Here is the most famous and important artists and art to meet as usual a big serving of healthy veggies hidden in a meal, to devour the children. In the same way that we learn to vegetables than adults enjoy, have children know the potential of this great art to appreciate.

Also encourages children in many ways to be creative. I think that is great and I imagine childhood bedrooms, desks of the parents, and the occasional refrigerator large galleries for this book. Schön.

I have given the book, a niece and my nephew, but not after a lot involved in the pages.

Hello, Gorgeous: Becoming Barbra Streisand (Hardcover) newly tagged "design"

AppId is over the quota
The best-selling biographer of Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor tells the electrifying story of how Barbra Streisand transformed herself into the greatest star of her era, etching “an indelible portrait of the artist as a young woman” (Publishers Weekly).

In 1960, she was a seventeen-year-old Brooklyn kid with plenty of talent but no connections and certainly no money; her mother brought her soup to make sure she stayed fed as she took acting classes and scraped out a living. Just four years later, Barbra Streisand was the top-selling female recording artist in America and the star of one of Broadway’s biggest hits. Now the acclaimed Hollywood biographer William Mann chronicles that dizzying ascent, telling the riveting behind-the-scenes story of how Streisand and her team transformed her from an unknown dreamer into a worldwide superstar.

Drawing on the private papers of Jerome Robbins and Bob Fosse, and interviewing scores of the friends and lovers who knew Barbara before she became Barbra, Mann recreates the vanished world of 1960s New York City and uncovers the truth behind the myths of her formative years. He shows us how Funny Girl was slowly altered, by Fosse and Robbins among others, from a Fanny Brice bio into a star-making vehicle for Streisand; takes us into the clubs and onto the set for her early nightclub and television appearances, including her torch-handing turn with Judy Garland; and introduces the canny marketing team whose strategies made her stardom seem inevitable. The Streisand who emerges is a revelation: a young woman who, for all her tough-skinned ambition, was surprisingly vulnerable in love.

Everyone who has felt outside the gate, as she once did, remembers a time when the newness and difference of Barbra Streisand changed everything and rewrote all the rules. In Hello, Gorgeous, Mann incisively illuminates the woman before she became the icon and pays tribute to one of the world’s most beloved performers.

Geometrical Design Coloring Book (Dover Design Coloring Books) (Paperback) newly tagged "design"

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
This book doesn't offer many design variations & is too simplistic for my tastes. While a few were great optical illusion type (and therefore almost worth the price), there are less than 5 complex designs, the rest are exact repeats with slightly different sized elements, angles, or another simple element added. Boring for those who want a challenge & dislike repeating same theme/concept/design. For no-brainer type meditations where you don't want to focus too much on demands of the design, it would be good, as well as for beginners or those intimidated with too many choices. Of course, some will say there aren't many options for variety because of the geometric theme's limits--but the same could be said for mandala adult coloring books, yet there are an unlimited number of designs & levels of challenge in all the mandala books, that is not found in any of the geometric ones, so far.

The designs were decent quality paper & lines, not best nor worst. See my other mandala/coloring book reviews for more details on the best choices from the 8 sampled (bought & still use). I especially recommend "Power Mandalas" (BEST of all offerings here), but NOT "Classic Mandalas" (low quality design, simple & boring).

HINT: Photocopy, scan & print, or trace each page-design onto good quality craft, watercolor and/or acid-free paper, because you WILL want to frame ALL of your completed work/designs in "Power Mandalas" and still be able to go back & re-do certain ones repeatedly :-) This same hint applies to all of the adult coloring books.
Have fun!

Presentation Patterns: Techniques for Crafting Better Presentations (Paperback) newly tagged "design"

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Presentation Patterns is the first book on presentations that categorizes and organizes the building blocks (or patterns) that you’ll need to communicate effectively using presentation tools like Keynote and PowerPoint.

Patterns are like the lower-level steps found inside recipes; they are the techniques you must master to be considered a master chef or master presenter. You can use the patterns in this book to construct your own recipes for different contexts, such as business meetings, technical demonstrations, scientific expositions, and keynotes, just to name a few.

Although there are no such things as antirecipes, this book shows you lots of antipatterns—things you should avoid doing in presentations. Modern presentation tools often encourage ineffective presentation techniques, but this book shows you how to avoid them.

Each pattern is introduced with a memorable name, a definition, and a brief explanation of motivation. Readers learn where the pattern applies, the consequences of applying it, and how to apply it. The authors also identify critical antipatterns: clichés, fallacies, and design mistakes that cause presentations to disappoint. These problems are easy to avoid—once you know how.

Presentation Patterns will help you

Plan what you’ll say, who you’ll say it to, how long you’ll talk, and where you’ll presentPerfectly calibrate your presentation to your audienceUse the storyteller’s “narrative arc” to full advantageStrengthen your credibility—and avoid mistakes that hurt itHone your message before you ever touch presentation softwareIncorporate visuals that support your message instead of hindering itCreate highly effective “infodecks” that work when you’re not able to deliver a talk in personConstruct slides that really communicate and avoid “Ant Fonts,” “Floodmarks,” “Alienating Artifacts,” and other errorsMaster 13 powerful techniques for delivering your presentation with power, authority, and clarity

Whether you use this book as a handy reference or read it from start to finish, it will be a revelation: an entirely new language for systematically planning, creating, and delivering more powerful presentations. You’ll quickly find it indispensable—no matter what you’re presenting, who your audiences are, or what message you’re driving home.

Diagramming the Big Idea: Methods for Architectural Composition (Paperback) newly tagged "design"

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

As a beginning design student, you need to learn to think like a designer, to visualize ideas and concepts, as well as objects. In Diagramming the Big Idea, Jeffrey Balmer and Michael T. Swisher illustrate how you can create and use diagrams to clarify your understanding of both particular projects and organizing principles and ideas. With accessible, step-by-step exercises that interweave diagrams, drawings and virtual models, the authors clearly show you how to compose meaningful and useful diagrams.

As you follow the development of the four project groups drawn from the authors’ teaching, you will become familiar with architectural composition concepts such as proportion, site, form, hierarchy and spatial construction. In addition, description and demonstration essays extend concepts to show you more examples of the methods used in the projects. Whether preparing for a desk critique, or any time when a fundamental insight can help to resolve a design problem, this book is your essential studio resource.

Paris Underground: The Maps, Stations, and Design of the Metro (Paperback) newly tagged "design"

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
Mark was born and brought up in London, England and as a kid he was always interested in the media and in trains. He built miniature TV studios out of Lego & sticky backed plastic. He set up a closed circuit radio station which got piped through to other parts of the family home. He collected old maps of trains and often went out exploring closed-down rail lines. Aged 14-16 Mark presented a weekly show on the local hospital radio station, collected records and attempted to DJ at local events. A genuine 'geek' in the making!

Following early interests, Mark's school project was on the London Underground in which he painted a revision of the classic Beck inspired Tube diagram. Marks version kept the diagrammatic style but retained the geographic position of the lines: the resulting mess convinced him why Beck was right to expand the central area but helped gain Mark a place at Art College in Southampton. It was there he conceived of an idea to start a 'what's on' listings magazine for the area. 'Due South' published from November 1982 but Mark stepped down after just a couple of years as Editor to persue more pressing political interests. He become an activist during the 1984/5 Miners Strike. This spurred his journalistic interests and he began working for a local radio station as a trainee reporter. After a few years he was reading the news not making it.

Given his ongoing interest in gay politics and a desire to move to a livelier city, he took a job with the progressive Manchester City Council as an Equality Officer in 1990, delivering training on tackling homophobia in the workplace. Meanwhile Mark developed ideas with a colleague for a national radio show and scored a huge coup by getting BBC Radio 1 to commission their first ever series aimed at young lesbians and gay men: 'loud'n'proud' in 1993. Mark became freelance journalist and newsreader for Manchester's Kiss102 from 1994.

He took four months out in London to work on BBC2's first series for lesbians and gays, 'Gaytime TV' and back at Kiss102, Mark fronted the daily entertainment show 'The Word' , became newsreader 'Peter Parker' for London's Kiss100 breakfast show and was promoted to Programme Manager until 1997 when he became full time producer at BBC Radio 1 on the Annie Nightingale show. In mid 1998 he joined MTV as a freelance Music Programmer then became a producer and presenter at Atlantic252.

In early 2000, Mark moved to Ministry Of Sound, helping set up their DAB Digital Radio station, and as Head of Radio at MoS, Mark applied for and won the licence to run a one month long FM version of the station.

Mark moved into consultancy after this and in 2002 he joined a fledgling TV channel as Channel Manager but by this stage had already become wrapped up in the idea of compiling a book that contained the official map of every urban transit system in the world. "Metro Maps of The World" was published in November 2003 and sold out its first run in a matter of weeks. In September 2005 Mark moved to France to focus on his next book about the Paris Metro. Meantime his original publication was picked up by a Dutch Publisher ('Metrokaarten van der wereld" 2006) and also by Penguin in the USA. The American version, "Transit Maps of The World" was published October 2007. Media coverage was phenomenal and led to unexpectedly high sales, and a Top 100 ranking in the Amazon Sales Charts where it is still often the number one best-selling book in it's category (Mass Transit)! Mark is hugely proud that his work has become the best-selling book about transport design.

The book on the design of the French capital's transit system was published in October 2008 as "Paris Metro Style in map and station design". Penguin US commissioned an American version of it so Mark re-worked the concept, updated the content and it was published on October 24 2009 by Penguin as "Paris Underground, The Maps, Stations, and Design of the Metro".

Mark's next book, a follow-up to the popular transit maps offering, is called 'Railway Maps of the World' and was published by Viking Adult in May 2011. He's also working on three other follow-up books in the design field.

He lives in Paris with two fat cats where he also writes comedy and is a freelance journalist.

Bits and Pieces (18 Small Quilts from Fat Quarters and Scraps) (18 Small Quilts from Fat Quarters and Scraps) (Hardcover) newly tagged "design"

What to do with the scraps from other quilts! That is always a question in a quilter's mind. BITS AND PIECES helps solve that problem. While the book is about making small quilts in the size range of 20" square, there is no reason you couldn't make several of the small quilts, put them together and make a bed sized one! A bit of sashing between each "quilt" and you have a large quilt instead. For example, in One Patch Garden, there are lots of colorful square with a border. So just make more squares from your leftovers and you have the bed quilt

Each pattern, of which there are 17, begins with a bit of information about the quilt. Then the size of the finished project is listed and a materials list is given. Cutting instructions come next followed by how to assemble the top and finishing directions. There are plenty of graphics to help you visualize what the instructions are telling you to do. And lots of tips are found in special boxes through out.

Your quilts will most likely not match the ones in the photos as your scraps are sure to be different than the author's. The quilts are divided into four types, those using squares and rectangles, those using triangles, those using diamonds and those using curves and circles with easy appliqué. This makes the book one in which everyone will find a project to their liking.

I did receive a Comparison Matrix, something that you probably won't receive when you order Autodesk AutoCAD Revit LT 2013 or AutoCAD LT 2013. This comparison really gives one an idea between the capabilities each has to offer, information a small business needs to know prior to investing in one or the other. AutoCAD LT 2013 has only four of the features, two in documentation and two in collaboration. I've decided replicate the Comparison Matrix (Copyright Autodesk, 2012) below, making note of the features AutoCAD LT 2013 has in parenthesis.

Autodesk Revit LT 2012 and AutoCAT LT 2013

Comparison Matrix

DOCUMENTATION

* Create documentation with 2D drafting and detailing tools (AutoCAT LT 2013)

* Place annotations, and dimensions to communicate additional design information (AutoCAT LT 2013)

* Automate the creation of schedules based on building components

* Automatically calculate and track material quantities in cost estimates

* Automatically update every documentation view when revisions are made to your design

3D MODELING

VISUALIZATION AND PRESENTATION

* Easily generate 3D orthographic or perspective views from any angle of the model to visualize the space

* Produce compelling, photorealistic renderings with Autodesk 360 Rendering without tying up your desktop

* Create real-time animations/walkthroughs to visualize the building virtually

COLLABORATION

* Design, document, and share files in the DWG format for smoother collaboration with project stakeholders (AutoCAT LT 2013)

* Reference other file formats, including DWF, image formats, and others (AutoCAT LT 2013)

* Exchange Revit files with stakeholders using Autodesk Revit software

AutoCAD 2013

There have been numerous improvements to AutoCAD 2013, some very subtle such as a minor font size increase to major ones such as the "Annotation Monitor" and the addition of Cloud. Some of the improvements are simply blips, but I've outlined what I can see so the individual users can decide for themselves whether or not they want to purchase or upgrade
AutoCAD 2013 is the 27th release, a technology that is used by a wide variety of occupations. The learning curve can be steep and I'd highly recommend adding one or two books to your library. I'd recommend selecting one or two of these: AutoCAD 2013 and AutoCAD LT 2013 Bible by Ellen Finkelstein, Mastering AutoCAD 2013 and AutoCAD LT 2013 by George Omura and, if you are a novice, AutoCAD 2013 For Dummies by Bill Fane.

Changes are the same for AutoCAD LT 2013 for Mac. If you opt for that software, I'd recommend adding Mastering the AutoCAD for Mac by George Omura and Rick Graham.

Hopefully, a simple overview of new/improved updates from AutoCAD LT 2012 and previous editions listed below will help make your purchasing decision.
